  Prologue

  Gray

I had always wanted to be taller.

Not stronger… because I was strong. I was also fast. But taller. Yes, give me an inch or two at least. Please. I scowled up at the man who brought these thoughts to the forefront of my mind.

  Taylor.

“Weapons training is essential, Gray,” The gruff bastard insisted. I was barely 5’3, without heels, and Taylor was a full foot taller than me. So how does one scowl correctly from a foot below? The answer: with a lot of effort.

We walked next to one another while pulling the heavily wrapped object across my Estonian estate grounds. I was confident that either one of us could have handled the task, but instead, we completed it together. The twilight sky, painted in hues of lavender and indigo, set a romantic scene that was perfect for dragging bodies. See? This is the stupid shit love makes you do, kids.

  No. Not love.

  Noppppppppppe. Ignore this crazy bitch.

“You don’t need weapons when you are one,” I responded with snark.

Taylor graced me with a booming chuckle that caused most of Silas’s men to jump and shift uncomfortably. I scoffed silently. These were soldiers, right? Or was Taylor just scary and I didn't see it? No. My carrot top was a cutie.

I took a moment to appreciate his thick, red hair that lay in lazy waves on top of his angular face. It was the only thing about Taylor that was lazy. On a bad day, he had a sharp tongue and was amazingly quick-witted. His entire demonic aura was saturated with danger and seduction. Even the way he smirked, just a small millimeter smile, was enough to send my hormones into flight.

Those emerald eyes lit with amusement, “You are absolutely infuriating today.”

I knew he meant that. The two of us hit heads on the best of days. We rarely agreed, but I respected him for his conviction regarding his opinions.

Even when it came to the useless act of weapons training.

“Today?” I scoffed with a grin.“Go to hell, Taylor. I’m infuriating every day.”

Taylor bit his soft, pink lip before smiling, “Unfortunately, I went to hell and the devil sent me back to the Horde.”

I only half heard his response because I loved seeing Taylor smile. It turned his devilishly handsome features to a brilliant masterpiece of crimson and emerald. Looking at him was an intense, albeit sexy, experience.

I chuckled at that. He always had some type of response. I envied him. Rhodes caught my eye and nodded to hurry. Now that we had arrived, the party could start. It was a fantastic night for burning the bodies of my enemy.

The closer I grew to Rhodes, the more magnetic his presence became. Those intuitive pale green eyes examined every part of my expression before instructing us to, “Throw the last one on there.”

Taylor and I both grinned at his masked impatience. Rhodes could be extremely intense when determined. After the events that had taken place today, he wanted this day to be over… preferably now. His masterful patience had reached an end. With one quick movement, we tossed the corpse on top of the sizeable mountain of dark metal and green leather.

Upon examining the many bodies, a deep rage surfaced underneath my calm facade. It felt like a tea kettle that was close to boiling. I appraised the clearing around us and leaned back into my heels. They sunk into the grass a solid inch, making me regret having worn them in the first place. Note to self: Heels are not appropriate for body burnings.

Rhodes’s offered me a small nod of appreciation before running a hand across his trimmed beard that surrounded his masculine sculpted lips. Those golden, tiny hairs sparkled under the setting sun and cast a golden halo around his silky waves. The man could easily be in a shampoo commercial. I envied his hand as it pushed through the thick strands like melted butter. I wanted my hands to do that.

Placing those thoughts to the side, I located the twins. Neo, broad-shouldered and bulky, stood in front of Silas’s men. His expression was blank and even. One would never guess that he and I were responsible for these bodies. His short hair, like his twin, was worn in a fade that showcased their angelic, yet masculine faces. His dark obsidian eyes met mine for a second before a flash of white teeth graced my vision. Damn. He was just way too handsome. It was a good thing I had two of them.

Athens stood against the treeline with a cocky smile and bright silver eyes. It had been a change that had occurred after his extreme power usage earlier. I didn’t mind the lack of glamour. I think it only added to his playful personality. Now, his eyes really did sparkle in amusement.

“Adyen?” I called out as a massive gold dragon shifted behind me. It cast a shadow that seemed to eclipse any of the beautiful evening light left. All of Silas’s men began to shift uncomfortably once again, which caused a slow smile to graze my lips in a predatory fashion.

A golden tail, wrapped in metallic scales, secured my waist comfortably. I placed my hand along the smooth, warm texture of his tail as he shifted my position. Once I was set a few feet back from the body (soon to be campfire) pile, he nudged my form gently with his massive snout. A sweet gesture from a gigantic dragon. He brought his chin to lay flat on the ground before releasing soft, swirling smoke from his dry, warm nose. The smoke smelled of cinnamon and ash. I pet his snout gently as those glittering black eyes watched me with interest.

I had never been this close to a dragon.

It seemed like things were going well thus far.

Despite their combined physical nature, I knew the two of them had very different personalities and thoughts. I suppose I had been a tad worried his dragon wouldn’t like me.

“Alright,” I sighed with dryness. “Let’s do this shit.”

The dragon fucking snorted at me. Was he laughing? The bastard was laughing. I let out a savage growl which caused Athens to grin from across the pile of bodies. I shook my head and turned my attention to Adyen’s massive form. He towered over the clearing with vibrating primal energy that would make a weaker fae faint. Literally, one of the soldiers had just fainted. Fantastic. Cream of the crop over there
.

As Adyen released a roar that shook the estate grounds, my eyes trailed to the treeline. Out here, I could almost forget what had happened. I could almost forget that these fuckers had tried to hurt my guard, my brother, and my favorite house.

  How the mighty have fallen.

  Assholes.

Adyen released an explosive stream of searing black flames that forced most of the group to back up. I didn’t move from my position, although I did place a hand across my eyes so that my pretty long lashes weren’t seared off. Rhodes advanced to stand by my side.

“That is a disgusting smell,” He noted with a slight accent to his smooth words. I wondered briefly how he had developed a British accent, but figured there would be time for questions like that later. I searched the sparkle in his light eyes… That liar. He was enjoying this display as much as I.

“Now, don’t go pretending you aren’t a monster like the rest of us,” I teased.

Rhodes sighed with a shrug, “Sometimes, the world needs monsters.”

I laughed at his avoidance. The other soldiers shifted nervously at my laughter. I supposed it looked like I was smiling about the burning bodies. Eh. Not that far from the truth, to be honest.

“Now to anyone else, that might sound a little psychotic, Rhodes,” I grinned like an idiot. Rhodes wrapped an arm around my shoulder gently and pressed a kiss to my temple. This time, I didn’t flinch like I had in the past. He had scars like me. Pain like me.

Rhodes leaned into me, “I prefer inventive or creative, kitten.”

The sound of his slight accent in my ear made my skin break out into small shivers. In what other ways could he be creative? My body clenched with pleasure as I attempted to focus on the bonfire in front of us.

Yes. You heard that right. I was getting all hot and bothered by Rhodes’s voice while the distinct smell of my enemies burning flesh permeated the air. I wish I could tell you that I was sorry about that.

“I prefer psychopath,” I turned into his muscled arms. Those warm, golden arms tightened around me in security. While everyone else was still bloody and disgusting, Rhodes had changed into a fresh suit. Asshole.

“I’ll be a psycho for you, Gray,” he murmured, kissing the top of my head.

  Chapter 1

  Gray

“I’ll order the repairs as discussed,” Tulsa agreed from across the kitchen island.

Her hair was brushed back in a smooth, sleek ponytail, and those shrewd eyes seemed to be working over time. I praised the fates that she had been gone during this morning’s attack. Not only had I grown to care about the woman, but I also needed someone familiar with my situation to maintain the estate during my absence.

It was evening and, similar to Rhodes, she was impeccably dressed and already prepared to tackle the project at hand. She hadn’t even asked about the many soldiers nor the smell of fae flesh burning. It was hard to find good help like her nowadays. The black leather binder would assist in the restoration of my property.

“Thank you, Tulsa,” I nodded. “We will be leaving in the morning most likely.”

“Baby!” Athens called out from the foyer. His velvet voice curled around my ears and caressed my entire body into lighting up. Tulsa rolled her eyes and turned to exit the marble wonder that was my kitchen. Despite her attitude, I knew Tulsa didn’t mind my men.

Hm. My men. When had that happened?

“In here,” I called out while taking a sip of my tea.

It was a quiet response, but I had no doubt he would hear it. Sometimes I tested their abilities. I was sorta an asshole. I just didn’t like to ruin the fun of figuring out what the twins were. I mean, I knew they were mages, but what type of mages? There were many options, if I correctly recalled.

A pair of deeply colored arms captured my waist as I let out a small gasp laugh. The feel of his large hands against my waist caused me to wiggle against him. I placed my tea down as Athens moved me from my chair to the kitchen island. The movement elicited a laugh before I looked down at my playful guard from my new elevated position. Hm, like the Queen I was soon to be…

“You stole my seat,” I offered a faux pout.

Athens immediately smiled, but grabbed my face, forcing it into a fishy face, “Oh no. Fuck no. You do not get to pout. Ever.”

I felt a laugh building in my chest.

“Why not?” Cue increase of fishy face pout.

“You’re already a beautiful fucking warrior queen if we add ‘cute’ into your arsenal… Hell, Gray, I don’t think I can handle that.”

His face looked pain stricken and it caused me to laugh even harder than before. I wiggled my face from his grasp and bit my lip to stop the laugh that bubbled up.

“I will try my damn hardest, Athens,” I snickered while running my fingers through his thick dark fade, “to not be cute.”

Athens sighed despondently, “No, it’s too late. I’ve seen the pout. I’m ruined.”

“My dearest apologies,” I cooed. His eyes glinted with that silver energy.

“I will forgive you, if… you make it up to me,” He sighed dramatically while resting his hands on my bare legs.

I was dressed comfortably in a pair of shorts and an oversized sweater. Not my best look, but, oh well. It was worth it to feel his warm hands on my skin again. I knew he was hesitant to touch me, but I loved his touch… as long as it wasn’t on my shoulders. I was getting better. Only with my guard, though. Screw anyone else.

“Oh?” I raised an eyebrow. “How so?”

“You can tell me how you’re doing after today,” He responded immediately.

I could tell the question made him nervous by how quickly he blurted it out. I wasn’t the best at opening up and he knew it. My heart warmed at his concern. Out of everything he could have asked or said, he wanted to know how I felt after the attack today. I couldn’t help the small smile that slipped onto my face.

Athens was playful in nature and usually optimistic. He tried to see the best in situations, nearly to a fault. I loved that about him. I envied that ability. I knew it took a lot for him to ask about such a serious and heavy topic.

My rage at our situation rippled through me like an angry wave. I inhaled a deep breath before responding, “Angry. Really fucking angry at Mario.”

Mario. The King of the dark fae. The one who had killed my parents after committing acts of brutality so demented that I felt sick even thinking about it. Now that he had found me, I was forced to return to my position as the True Heir of the Horde.

I couldn’t let him get away with what he had done.

  Even if it meant war.

  Especially if it meant war.

Silas didn’t know what to do when it came to war.

“What about Neo? How do you think he’s doing?” I asked quietly.

His eyes darkened in concern for his twin.

“Neo won’t talk about it, even if I asked,” He muttered. “I don’t think he’s upset. I know I wouldn’t be if it meant saving my brothers or you.”

I liked that he thought of the other men as brothers. His comments were a sobering thought. I leaned my forehead down to meet his. The warmth that his body radiated was damn near supernatural.

“It’ll be okay, Athens,” I mumbled quietly.

It was odd to be in the position to comfort someone else, but I could tell he was worried. This was a side of Athens I had yet to see. It made me appreciate his optimism even more.

“If you don’t want it to be okay,” He whispered quietly. “I’m always here for you, Gray.”

I could feel the heat between the two of us. Our lips were inches apart. Between them were phrases of comfort and security.

I leaned forward to press a kiss to his warm lips. We had only kissed once and it had been playful and fun. This kiss though, which he deepened, was... something else. It was damn near therapeutic.

My arms wrapped around his warm neck as those large hands moved to hold my hips. His thumbs traced patterns on the skin
above my shorts that caused my breathing to hitch. Slow and soothing patterns that were reflected in the movement of our kisses. I pressed deeper and let my tongue meet his in a tight embrace. The smell of coconut and something uniquely magical surrounded me in a soft caress.

“Shit, sorry,” Neo mumbled from the doorway. I pulled away as Athen’s mouth turned up in a playful smirk. I looked at his twin and felt myself sober slightly. Those dark, sad eyes held a glittering heat to them that caused me to go still. Neo often made me feel off kilter with just a look. I supposed it was because I knew what those eyes looked like empty. Ruthless. I appreciated that about him. Usually, being a monster was a very lonely affair.

No more though. I had five of my very own monsters now.

“Nothing to be sorry about,” Athens winked as Neo moved toward the counter.

He positioned himself behind me so that I was sandwiched between the two of them. I could smell his soft mint scent and the heat radiating from his bare forearms. They leaned close enough to touch and I was very tempted to do just that. To touch.

“Already packed and ready to go?” I asked him curiously.

I finally gave in and grabbed his wrist lightly. I just needed to touch him somehow. It had been an odd day for both of us, but I knew Neo wasn’t used to touch like Athens. Neo’s eyes glittered and shot to our combined touch.

  He smiled slightly, “Never unpacked.”

I shook my head, “I can’t believe we are going to the Horde lands tomorrow… That is going to be--”

  “Odd,” Neo supplied.

His expression was replaced by a look of darkness that I didn’t like. Athens face didn’t match his. He didn’t seem affected by the prospect of going back home. Home? It didn’t seem like my home.

“Hey,” Athens drawled. “We can see mom. She would love to meet you, Gray.”

I chuckled, “Want me to meet the parents already?”

Neo mumbled, “At least one of them.”

One of them? Did their parents not live together?

“What about your father?” I asked because screw me and my lack of filter.
